“Be yourself. Above all, let who you are, what you are, what you believe, shine through every sentence you write, every piece you finish.”—- John Jakes
I was told once by my sixth grade teacher that once I was grown I would have to change my name because it was spelled incorrectly. I considered it then, but now I wouldn’t change my name for anything. It tells the story of my heritage in a way. I can’t tell you much about my birth mother but my father is the one who named me and the misspelling was done do to his illiteracy. He grew up in Mississippi where he had to work the field instead of get an education, which he insisted I got when I was growing up. I didn’t understand it then but I do now.
He didn’t want me to witness the same embarrassment, to have the shame, and to feel the helplessness he has for most of his life. And when I see my name written, I am reminded that his determination to make me better than himself has paid off. He has never been able to read a full page alone, I have read books from some of my favorite authors. He can barely write more than his name, here I am writing my own blog. He didn’t finish elementary school, I’m embarking on my path to higher education now. I am living proof that a cycle can be broken. That no one has to be a victim of their society. But that’s just part of the reason I’ve chosen to utilize a blog as my canvas.
I often spend a substantial amount of time in my head pondering about the fate of society and where we are headed as a whole. I don’t know many that share the same thoughts as myself so it’s hard to express my feelings fearing ridicule and rejection. But now I feel that my thoughts are unique and profound, they are treasures that can’t be veiled forever. So with that being said, I introduce to you “Back to Reality”. These are my thoughts, my feelings and my truth. They may make you laugh, cry, or piss you off, if they do neither I haven’t done my job. Your comments negative or positive are welcomed I love individuality, monotony bores me. So if you’re ready for unbridled truth stick around if not……get ready then.
